TORONTO — Studio Ghibli's much-anticipated fantasy epic, The Boy and the Heron, directed by Academy Award-winning Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, is set to open the 48th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on Thursday, September 7, at Roy Thomson Hall. This event marks the first time a Japanese or animated film will kick off the festival.

Cameron Bailey, CEO of TIFF, is looking forward to the unique and transformative experience Miyazaki's latest masterpiece promises. The film, which has already achieved record-breaking success in Japan, will make its international debut at TIFF, allowing audiences outside of Japan their first glimpse. The North American distribution rights have been secured by GKIDS, with a broader theatrical release scheduled for later this year.
